‘Revenge’ Season 3 Recap, Episode 13 “Hatred” – Don’t cry for me, Queen Victoria

One could argue that Victoria only became Queen Bitch because she loved a husband who continually betrayed her trust, and then she betrayed the trust of an honest man who loved her. Now, her children have become the next generation of vengeful, vindictive and slightly psychopathic men who might have turned out a little differently if they had been hugged more when they were kids.
Revenge Season 3, Episode 13 Recap – “Hatred”
Patrick – poor little orphan boy
We all know the story about a teenaged Victoria leaving her first-born son at a convent so she could take up the scholarship to study art in Paris. As it turns out, we didn’t know the whole story. Nolan’s attempt to further turn Patrick against his mother backfires as Patrick confronts his mother about the identity of his birth father. The more Victoria tries to bury that part of the truth, the more determined Patrick is to find out more. With the information Nolan conveniently provides to Patrick, Victoria reluctantly accompanies him to find Jimmy Brennan, now with a whole other life and a whole new family. Patrick tells Victoria about the loveless childhood he endured after his adoptive mother passed away when he was four and his adoptive father remarried a woman who gave him no love or attention, making him believe he is unlovable.
Daniel – poor little rich boy
In complete contrast to Patrick’s childhood, Daniel had everything money can buy. One might argue he even had two loving parents, who perhaps smothered him with too much love and expectation to live up to his name. The more they pushed, the more he wanted to be different to them, only to find that he is exactly like his parents. Marrying Emily Thorne was supposed to be the marriage of his dreams but she turned out to be a manipulative liar – everything his mother warned him about. He realizes he is in love with Sara, the girl who ended up in a wheelchair after his playboy days caused them to be in a near-fatal car accident, in which she suffered the most and he walked off scott-free. But this love affair cannot last, no matter how much he flaunts it in front of his new wife, because as his mother suggested, Sara is a soft target for Emily and she will be the loser in Emily’s fight to win him back.
Conrad loses his last chance at happiness
Call it tough love but Conrad has a new agenda – to teach his son a lesson not to mess with him. Having bribed Margaux’s assistant at the magazine co-owned with Daniel to plant an incriminating line in her article about Conrad buying the gun used to shoot Emily for Lydia, he offers Margaux one way out of the libel suit he has filed against her: in exchange for him withdrawing the suit, she has to buy back Daniel’s share of the magazine and then sell it to Conrad. Clearly this is a battle between father and son and Margaux did well to pick the winning side (Daniel is no match for his parents). Conrad has no desire to run a magazine – he just wants to destroy his son after his own chance of happiness (with Lydia) was destroyed by Emily’s press conference declaring Lydia to have been her shooter in an attempt to win back Daniel.
Emily wins…
Daniel may have thought that by letting Sara act like the new lady of the Manor it would eventually wear Emily down and force her to ask for a divorce so that he can have his happily ever after with Sara. But he hadn’t counted on the fact that there is someone else that Sara loves more than she loves him – her mother. He may have underestimated the mother-daughter bond just because his own mother-son relationship is so dysfunctional, but Emily knows better. Her warnings to Sara fell on deaf ears but it takes only one phone call to her mother for her to turn up at the Manor, calling out Sara’s lies that she was at work when she was actually holed up with the man who nearly got her killed. Sara may have forgiven Daniel for his past sins, but her mother has not. When Sara refuses to leave with her mother, she is disowned. But Daniel’s win over Emily was brief – Sara knows she is no match for Emily’s ruthlessness and that she would not stop until she got Daniel back.
…but not entirely
Emily’s thirst for revenge on the Graysons only increased after learning that she would never be able to have children of her own, thanks to the bullet holes he put in her stomach. Breaking up with Aiden was heartbreaking. Finding out that he is with another woman is even harder, especially when the woman is Niko, the woman who has been tending to her care and the daughter of her late mentor, Takeda. As things get more complicated in Emily’s life, it would appear she is suffering the side effects of the trauma and concussion she suffered after she was shot. She loses consciousness and then would find herself in unfamiliar situations, like turning up at Nolan’s house without any recollection of how she got there, or weirder still, waking up in Conrad’s bed with him saying “until our next tryst…” Was any of this real?
Niko – seeking her own revenge
Let’s not forget Niko’s father was the man who trained Aiden and Emily to be the ruthless killers and revenge-plotters that they are, so one should not have been too surprised to find her peeling mangoes in Nolan’s kitchen with her father’s autopsy reports spread out across the kitchen counter. Nolan opted to leave out the fact he wants both her and Aiden out of his house while she has a knife in her hands, declaring that she is practicing separating skin from flesh in preparation for when she finds her father’s killer. Through studying the crime scene photos, Niko has deduced that he was killed by his own katana – a Japanese sword that he has carried with him everywhere he went, which is now missing…except it’s not really – it is hidden under Aiden’s bed. Mr Mathis: beware!
Victoria made me cry
No, Queen Vic didn’t bully me and scare me to tears. In quiet contrast to the usual ruthless manner in which she dishes out every word, her admission to Patrick about how he came to be conceived was a rare touching moment of weakness, even as she tried to explain how she had attempted to reinvent herself in her teenage years after being molested by her mother’s lovers. She was never able to truly run away from her past and she was raped by a man whom she trusted and befriended – the result of that violent act was Patrick. Right there and then, the mother-son bond strengthened immeasurably, and for a few minutes, I believed that Victoria Harper-Grayson is a human being who just tried to do the best she could for her children, no matter the cost. How will this affect Patrick now, knowing the truth about his birth father? Well, if the painting and the pyromania in the gallery that followed is any indication, someone is going to pay, big time.
It’s not all doom and gloom in the Hamptons
While everyone seems to be busy seeking revenge, love is not lost on everyone. Margaux has been playing happy families with Jack and little Carl, spending every night at the Porters’ above the Stowaway. With all that has happened to Jack, it is only fair that he finds happiness at last – and so he has with Margaux, someone who seemed entirely out of his league but has come to be his soulmate and a trusted confidante. Now Jack is ready to take the next step which includes finding a house with the white picket fence and a nice yard. I genuinely wish them well because Jack deserves to smile a little more!
And now for the big surprise…welcome back…Mrs Grayson?
Not much has ever been said of the first Mrs Grayson, other than that she was ousted by Victoria. What has she of the First Wives Club been up to for the past near-thirty years in California? And why is she back in the Hamptons? Did someone call her? What does she want? Given she lost her man to Victoria once before, can we expect that in a new battle between the two Mrs Graysons, that Victoria would win again? Or would there possibly be a battle between the THREE Mrs Graysons, now that Emily has joined the club?
Whatever her agenda, there is no need to cry for Queen Victoria. Let the games begin!
