The official news from NBC is that the season finale of SNL that airs on May 15th will be hosted by Alec Baldwin* and the musical guest will be Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. By all means, this sounds like a great show. I think the unofficial subtext from NBC might be “we apologize for having such a horrible lineup of people on SNL this year”. I’ve put most of the episodes out of my mind, but it’s hard to forget January Jones as the farting Grace Kelly, or the glow-in-the-dark Kesha (Ke$ha) chick.
SNL TRIVIA: Baldwin returns for his fifteenth time and will tie Steve Martin for the show record for most host appearances. Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers will make their eighth appearance as musical guest.
*Not to be confused by Adam Baldwin, who is actually someone I think would host SNL really well. So would Nathan Fillion, Krysten Ritter, Kristen Bell, Aldis Hodge, Jared Padalecki, Clarke Duke, Ryan Hansen, Jane Lynch, Felicia Day, Courtney Cox Arquette… there are a lot of funny people that they could pick from. And yet, they don’t. And this is the problem with America, people. That, and the fact that Google calendar still confuses me.
There’s nothing wrong with Alec, he’s funny. But he’s done it before, and I’d like to see some new talent. They give us new talent in the cast, but then these awful hosts (Ryan Phillipe, Taylor Swift?) that are predictable. If they wanted a funny show, pick someone less obvious that will really make the show worth watching. I am basing this not on who is popular, but who I believe to be funny from watching interviews or listening to DVD commentaries. But go ahead, SNL. Go use the flippin’ Jonas Brothers or something. Anyone else miss Mad TV?
