Unlike Alexis Bellino from The Real Houseives of Orange County, I’m using the term “bullying” properly.
You know how there’s that saying about how we all put our pants on the same, one leg at a time? Well, these days, I think a lot of us get our news the same way – via Twitter. So, it is through Twitter that I noticed Prison Break was trending and went to investigate. After all, no one loves that show more than I, and a movie of the series would be gladly welcomed! (Though, yes, oddly timed.) When I read that Wentworth Miller’s costars were supportive, I thought…well, of course they’d support a movie! But it wasn’t a movie they were talking about.
As you probably have heard by now, Wentworth Miller (age 41) has now come out as a gay man.
First off, whoa. He’s that old? Not that it’s SO old. But…he certainly doesn’t look it. Anyway…
He did this when he was invited to the St. Petersburg International Film Festival in Russia. He wrote to the festival director, as posted on the GLAAD website:
“Thank you for your kind invitation. As someone who has enjoyed visiting Russia in the past and can also claim a degree of Russian ancestry, it would make me happy to say yes. However, as a gay man, I must decline.”
“I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government. The situation is in no way acceptable, and I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly.”
What does he mean?
Russa has a new anti-gay law, which was passed by Russian President Vladimir Putin . Part of the law involves Russian-born children only being allowed to be adopted by same-sex couples. The law also bans LGBT behavior or “propaganda” (such as a T-shirt) shown in public. If you do? As a criminal, you might be fined or even arrested.
But there’s always hope. Miller finished with, “Perhaps, when and if circumstances improve, I’ll be free to make a different choice.”
Is this the first time you are hearing about this law by Russia?
