David Hasselhoff is prepared to host the one-hour special The Gulf is Back. This TV special will air on The CW Network, and honor the gulf region. You can watch this special on Friday, August 27 at 8pm EST.

Dean Cain was once superman. These days...who knows. I would have preferred Brandon Routh.

Celebrities appearing will be Dean Cain, Shannon Elizabeth and B.B. King. Musical acts will be Lonestar, Ricky Skaggs, Taylor Hicks, Bo Bice and Brian McKnight. This could otherwise read as: Someone I thought was cool in the 90’s, someone I was annoyed by even in the 90’s, musical legend, boring country music group, no clue, American Idol nobody, ditto, and blergh. For an event and cause that really does need more attention called to it, this seems like a way to get people to turn their heads. These people (generally) have careers that are sad enough, without adding on thinking about the devastation of the gulf.

Much as you might care about helping the gulf, I understand if this TV special doesn’t appeal to you. For all the talk from CW stars like Ian Somerhalder and Sophia Bush, I had thought there would be a younger, more recognizable and current list of people, especially to air it on a network with a target age range of people in their teens.

Considering what a joke David Hasselhoff is, he’s a surprising and disappointing choice for a host. This situation isn’t a joke at all.

From the press release:

Actor and singer David Hasselhoff will host the special, which focuses on the resiliency of the residents of the Gulf Coast region and how they are bouncing back from the worst oil spill in the nation’s history while working tirelessly to restore their communities and lives.
