Take George Clooney home and tuck him into bed with you, if that’s what you’re into. And by George Clooney, I mean his face on the DVD (or Blu-ray) cover of The Descendants, which is now available for purchase. Now, this film wasn’t just one of the years most critically acclaimed films, it was also one of the films I thought deserved all of the acclaim it got. And given all the blu-ray features, it just makes sense that you’d opt for that version over the straight DVD copy.

The movie has heartbreak, humor, and plenty of that delicious Clooney. But I’d like to mention that The Secret Life of the American Teenager Shailiene Woodley was terrific as the cynical teenage daughter, Nick Krause (now on GCB) as the unlikely charming slacker named Sid, the always amazing (and finally getting more of the recognition she deserves – and p.s. watch Archer) Judy Greer, plus my quirky high school choice of a crush from Scream, Matthew Lillard. (My friend had dibs on Skeet Ulrich, plus I have always liked the funny boys.)

What is The Descendants about? Based on the best-selling novel by Kaui Hart Hemmings and set in Hawaii, THE DESCENDANTS is a sometimes humorous, sometimes tragic journey for Matt King (George Clooney) an indifferent husband and father of two girls, who is forced to re-examine his past and embrace his future when his wife suffers a boating accident off of Waikiki. The event leads to a rapprochement with his young daughters while Matt wrestles with a decision to sell the family’s land handed down from Hawaiian royalty and missionaries.

When it comes to beautiful movies that you want to own because you’ll re-watch them so often, and you’ll want to lend it to everyone… The Descendants is a great pick. It makes you think about life and love and forgiveness. Those are three big life things. In fact, there are a lot of questions you can ask to discuss as you watch the movie. (I can’t decide whether it’s a movie or a film – its’ comfortable and easy accessibility makes it seem like it’d be a movie. But it’s really closer to a piece of art, and therefore a film. Even if it has a big name attached.)

In terms of DVD vs Blu-ray, the Blu-ray has 15 extras while the DVD only as 3 (which is a huge shame, ugh!) The DVD extras aren’t all that important, unless you really want to learn about how people dress in Hawaii. The Blu-ray provides music videos that you’ll love.
