Ever wanted to see Ryan Gosling dance?

Amelia Lowe, Dareian Kujawa, Janaya French, Matthew Kazmierczak dance a contemporary routine choreographed by Stacey Tookey on SYTYCD Season 9.

Matthew looks like Ryan Gosling the more I think about it. And hey, when is that ever a bad fate?

The song was “Modern Drift” by Efterklang. I’ve never heard it before, but it was … like a spiritual experience. I mean… well, maybe not that. But it was damn good. It reminded me of the band Stars, if you know them. (And you should look them up, I recommend “Elevator Love Letter” and “Your Ex-Lover is Dead”.)

The routine was like an awakening of souls, who were vulnerable and full of longing. There wasn’t a tone of pairing/symmetry (which can be boring) but I really liked when they did incorporate that. It reminded me of quirky paper dolls, or artistic marionettes performing on a stage. I think Tim Burton would really have appreciated this dance.

And like dolls who go back in place when you’re looking, at the end of the routine they all ended up standing still in the middle of the stage. That was a powerful moment.
