The latest Jane By Design Fashion challenge to promote the new ABC Family show involved transforming a hideous Christmas vest.

If anyone looked at the “before” version and thought “cute” then they need some serious fashion help. For me, I had no clue how to make this wearable. And it’s not as though I have access to a sewing machine. What I did was to create two Haute Couture Cat looks, since I have two cats.

Ugly Christmas Vests for Women – What can you DO with them? Turn them into Clothes for Cats this Christmas!

Look 1

The first look is a Little Red Riding Hood inspired cape piece, since Fairytale shows like Once Upon a Time and Grimm are so popular right now. (Not to mention the Snow White movies and the recent Rapunzel take from Disney, Tangled.) Capes, Capelets and Cloaks are pretty popular for Winter all the time. This has an optional scarf that slides through slots that buttons the look together.

Step 1: Cut out a pattern for the cape so that it is symetrical. Make sure to include the hood shape.

Step 2: Cut out the strip to use as a closure. I used a strip with buttons and some gold embellishment. This meant I had two layers of fabric to work with, which game in handy. The buttons are only decorative, not being used for their function.

Step 3: Slide the scarf through the loop!

Look 2

The second is a Cat Poncho! There is a huge untapped market for this. It’s the easiest thing to get your cat to wear. I added a bow. Accessories for this look include a purple hat (with golden star) and a tiny purple clutch. The slight androgynous nature and the unique preppy style of a poncho reminds me of Spencer Hastings (Troian Bellisario) from Pretty Little Liars. I can see her wearing a poncho and a hat just like this. The hat, if you notice, is absolutely wearable for a cat, as I’ve turned it into a bit of a headaband that slips over the ears.

Step 1: Cut out the poncho shape.

Step 2: Cut out a bow applique and apply it.

Step 3: Fit it on your model. Inquire what accessories she would like.

Step 4: I cut out the hat applique. Then I cut out a long strip of green felt and turned it into a round crown shape and taped it together. Then I taped the hat to the headband so it could be slipped on the cat. A gold star was also added to the hat.

Step 5: Cut out the purple applique and fashion it into a tiny clutch. Purple and red go good together.

Making clothes for cats is not easy. And to be honest, cats don’t like to wear stuff. But when you walk into a pet store during Halloween or Christmas, it’s hard not to wish you had some little hat for them to wear. If cats did wear clothing, they would absolutley want fabulous poncho’s and capes like this.

Fashion happens when reinvention is combined with exceptional vision. Look inside your trunk and take out the holiday sweater. You see something for your grandmother. Now look again. What do you see now? You must use every ounce of creativity you have to turn the holiday sweater into something special. Something spectacular. I don’t care if you use scissors or glue, your fat jeans or a slice of stale fruitcake. Turn that sweater into something fresh & exciting that could be the next big trend for Holiday 2012. When you think you’ve created something innovative and amazing, whether it’s a bracelet or a mini skirt, post before and after photos to your blog, along with a step-by-step description of how you came up with your creation. – Gray Chandler Murray of Donovan Decker
