‘Shrek the Musical’ DVD / Blu-ray Review – How this colorful musical can charm even your teen
| October 25, 2013 at 6:27 PM EDTYou know the movie, but what about the musical?
What IS Shrek the Musical?
“The greatest fairy tale never told comes to life as never before in SHREK THE MUSICALr, the highly acclaimed Broadway production based on the smash-hit movie. Called a “triumph of comic imagination” (Elysa Gardner, USA Today) that “never stints on spectacle or laughs” (David Rooney, Variety), SHREK THE MUSICALr received eight 2009 Tony Awardr nominations including Best Musical. Featuring a fantastic score of 17 all-new songs, along with unforgettable characters and outrageous humor, it’s ogre-sized fun for the whole family!”
What is the show like?
The musical translates beautifully to DVD and Blu-ray, giving you the vibrant colors, bright lights, and pitch-perfect vocals from your prime seat on your very own couch. (Or chair, although let’s all agree that couches are better, yes?)
If you haven’t seen Shrek the Musical, the story follows the movie. But, of course, it’s so much more than that. There are songs! And…well, dancing! While the costumes and characters are faithful to what you already know, the songs are totally original and fun to sing in the shower the next day. There’s a certain excitement and grandeur that comes with plays and musicals, and even on DVD, you feel that power of a musical.
The colorful staging and costumes are really perfect…enough to capture even the youngest kid’s attention even if they don’t pay attention to any dialogue.
Meanwhile, the wit and satire play up nicely for teens and adults. Truly, it’s a fast paced journey that keeps your mind awake.
Recommended for: You know what, I’d say kids, teens, AND adults. The teens might give you a bit of gruff, but this really is enjoyable for anyone. And who doesn’t like a green ogre or two?
