The X Factor 2013 Top 6 Performances

Restless Road, “Red.” Well hello, Restless Road. This was by far the best performance by them ever, I’d say. Who knew it would come from a Taylor Swift song. Their vocals were tight, their chemistry is solid and their stage presence has gone from awkward to sort of sexy. I think it might be safe to say this will be enough to send them on to the semi-finals.

Rion Paige, “See You Again.” I’m happy that Rion got to sing a song by a country artist since that’s the kind of singer she wants to be. And I thought her performance was very solid. I’m not sure if it will help her get out of the bottom where she found herself last week, but it was definitely a soft yet powerful performance.

Jeff Gutt, “Without You.” Well this is a stretch for a diva song since Mariah Carey only covered, but OK. But whatever. Who cares about the theme. Jeff had another great moment with this song. I loved the rock and roll version of it. The vocals were tight and it was emotional and very connected. Great job.

Ellona Santiago, “Applause.” This was a joke, right? She looked ridiculous. She was saying some word other than “applause.” I don’t even know what that was. I’m calling that the worst performance of the season. I thought it was awful.

Alex & Sierra, “Say My Name.” Well that was not the song choice I expected, but it worked. And for the first time this season, Sierra was stronger than Alex. And I think that was important for their continued success. Alex has been outshining her, so it was good to see her step up.

Carlito Olivero, “Let’s Get Loud.” OK, the song choice makes sense. And it allowed Carlito to work the stage. His moves were solid and his vocals were good too. And it wasn’t cheesy and weird like Ellona. So you can be upbeat and showy without being weird.

Restless Road, “Wake Me Up.” The first performance, of course, was better, but this was pretty solid for the unplugged theme. And the emotions were nice. Vulnerability is always nice. I think they’ll be here next week.

Rion Paige, “Glass.” Tender, sweet, emotional. This was definitely one of Rion’s best moments. I hate to think she’s going home tomorrow night, but I think that might be the case.

Jeff Gutt, “Daniel.” His first performance was definitely better, but his stripped down song was emotional and tender and soft, which was what he was going for.

Ellona Santiago, “If I Were a Boy.” Well this was a lot better than her first performance. I would have gone with a different Beyonce song, but whatever. Her vocals were good, which means she’s better than those dumb production numbers Demi forces her into.

Alex & Sierra, “Say Something.” That was actually better than their first performance. That has been rare this second round. But this makes two in a row. Great job. Emotional. Them both playing instruments. Great.

Carlito Olivero, “Stand By Me.” Wow, this was fantastic. I was thinking it was all over with Carlito, but this changes everything. At least with me. And it should change everything with voters. This was great.
