x-factor-2013-final-four

It’s semi-finals night on The X Factor 2013 and the final four acts will be fighting for survival by way of your votes, America.

The final four — Alex & Sierra, Restless Road, Carlito Olivero and Jeff Gutt — will each sing two songs tonight and then duet (which sounds ridiculous since there are two groups, but little this show does makes sense). And we’ll be live-blogging the performances as they go. I’ll be reviewing each performance and assigning the letter grade I think each one deserves. I’ll also be sharing with you how to vote for your favorites. So don’t go anywhere! Here we go!

The X Factor 2013 Semi-Finals Performances

Round One: America’s Choices

Carlito Olivero, “Boyfriend.” Bye, Carlito. America picked a horrible song and since you should’ve been gone weeks ago, this week you’re toast. You’re cute and you can move the stage, but that’s about it. OK, I’m not being totally fair. He really is a great performer. But it’s just not my thing. Eh.

Restless Road, “That’s My Kind of Night.” Much better song choice, America. This was right up their alley. This is the exact music they want to and should make. They had a lot of fun and it showed. And they were totally in sync. It was a great performance.

Alex & Sierra, “Little Talks.” Zzzzzzz. I mean the vocals were OK, but now they’re becoming one-trick ponies. I was terribly bored. I found myself looking at my phone within seconds.

Jeff Gutt, “Hallelujah.” I’ve heard this song perfumed on competition songs a lot and I think Jeff’s was one of the best. If not the best. I liked the rock slant, which is something we haven’t seen done with the song. I think it was a great performance and he should be in the finals.

Round 2: Duets

Alex & Sierra vs. Carilto Olivero, “Falling Slowly.” Well that was a horrible idea. That song would have been a great choice for just Alex & Sierra, but not as a weird duet (trio). Weird, weird weird.

Restless Road vs. Jeff Gutt, “Every Breath You Take.” This duet, to me, was much better. Jeff Gutt was spot on and Restless Road was pulling out some tight harmonies. And they all also stuck to who they really are, so that was pretty sweet. I liked it.

Round 3: Coach’s Song Choice

Carlito Olivero, “I Need To Know.” This was a much better performance for him than “Boyfriend.” It’s clearly what he should be doing, so I liked it a lot more. I still think he’s going home tomorrow night, but he’s a very talented guy.

  • Performance grade: B+

Restless Road, “Wanted.” I think this was pretty solid. It wasn’t my favorite, but I think they deserve a spot in the finale and I think they’ll get there. I think. Do you?

Alex & Sierra, “Gravity.” I’m kind of tired of seeing them sing to each other. What happened to connecting to the audience? At least the lyrics were great. It was soft and tender and sweet. I think it was their best performance (if I look past how annoying their sappiness is).

  • Performance grade: A+

Jeff Gutt, “Demons.” Smart song choice, Kelly. Imagine Dragons is huge right now, so with Jeff’s ability to perform like no other, he should have an easy spot in the finale next week. He had a big night. Hallelujah was better, but this was pretty solid, too.
