The X Factor 2013 Premiere Recap: Auditions Get Off To A Strong Start| September 12, 2013 at 7:00 AM EST
The X Factor is back with a mostly-new judging panel and a whole new group of hopefuls.
And there were some pretty strong standouts, both good and bad. Let’s take a look at some of the best and the worst from the first night of The X Factor 2013.
Carlito Olivero. He opened the night with his smooth version of Rhianna’s “Stay” and he charmed the judges with his effortless voice and the way he worked the audience. Simon liked his voice and his charisma and so he get’s a yes from Mr. Cowell. He get’s three others as well. He moves on to the next round.
Sally Hessnice. She was whacky and not good, but they decided letting a 55-year-old woman make a fool of herself singing Whitney Houston on television was good TV, so there you go. After a few jabs, she gets four Nos.
K-nected. Now this is the kind of artist to put on TV to make fun of. They were a mother-daughter group and they were totally awful. They of course don’t make it through.
Lillie McCloud. OK, first of all, this woman is a grandmother. A 54-year-old grandmother. And she doesn’t look a day over 30. And her voice? Amazing. I’d call her the best audition of the whole episode. Let’s hope she sticks around. She’s got the sound, the voice, the audience connection and even the look, despite not being a young person. The judges liked her also. She got a standing ovation and four yeses and moves on to the next round.
Alex & Sierra. They’re a boyfriend and girlfriend group and when they said they were going to sing Britney Spears’ “Toxic,” the audience and judges were all, whaaaaaat. But then they pulled out a modern, trendy, guitar version and it was very interesting. Actually, I’m not even sure if he was singing until later. I could only hear her. But then he sang and he was pretty good as well. I was convinced they’d want her and not him. But he proved himself as well. They got four yeses and are moving on to the next round.
Rion Paige. At only 13 and living with medical issues most of us never have to deal with, she had a voice a presence about her that can only be explained as extraordinary. And for the record, I used that word before Simon Cowell did. I was live recapping this and he and I truly said the same thing. She had a great audition and story. She got four easy yeses after Simon Cowell likened her to Carrie Underwood.
