Last, but certainly not least, in our look at the So You Think You Can Dance Season 10 Top 20 are the Contemporary Girls. In fact, they’re the most. There are 6 of them!  Technically, 5 and 1 Jazz dancer, but we are just lumping them together, just like the producers did on the show.

Let’s take a look at most of these lovely ladies and see what will help make them stand out in a crowded group.

How I know that the SYTYCD Season 10 producers are favoring the contemporary girls – almost every single one of these girls are familiar, and not just their face but their story.

Amy Yakima

Amy Yakima

Amy, listed as Contemporary, but she says she’s Jazz, has to be a strong favorite heading into this competition. She was constantly making the judges nearly have a coronary they were so excited every time she danced in Vegas. Sonya was literally leaping out of her seat. She has an infectiously exuberant personality. She is part of that SYTYCD family that has many friends who have already been part of the Top 20 in seasons past. Right now, the Top 4 is her’s to lose, because everything we’ve seen and heard from her so far screams SYTYCD Season 10 finalist. Will she show up? I hope so. I really enjoy her.

Hayley Erbert

Hayley Erbert

Hayley is an interesting one for me. She is a beautiful girl and a beautiful dancer, but I just don’t feel that connection with her yet. If it makes sense she seems like a So You Think You Can Dance character… like if I was trying to explain a general idea of a SYTYCD contestant, I would describe her – but only because I don’t have a distinct idea of her personality yet. But that’s what all those little videos are for before the dances, and I hope she brings it in those, because I have a feeling she can do great at a lot of these styles.

Jasmine Harper

Jasmine Harper

Hey, did you know Jasmine used to date Cyrus?? Seriously, why did Nigel like making her cry about that so much? Does he gain power from the dancer’s tears? Anyway, I think Jasmine can go very far in the competition. The audience is already rooting for her (the crying!) and her first audition solo has stuck with me more than almost any other one. She is phenomenal. My fear if she makes the Top 10 – Nigel will bring Cyrus back as an AllStar (even though they’ve chose All-Stars and he’s not one of them) and have her do one of those emotional lyrical Hip Hop routines from NappyTabs, just to emotionally torture poor Jasmine. To be fair, that would probably send her right to the finals, though.

Jasmine Mason

Time for other Jasmine! Our lone Jazz dancer is the one I’m probably least familiar with in the bunch, but her video was cute and her dance with Yakima in the Green Mile episode was interesting because most people seemed to find themselves drawn to looking at her. I don’t think anyone seems to know what it is about Jasmine that is so entrancing, but she definitely has that something special that if she can make herself standout in a dance in the next week or so, she could go a lot further than anyone expects. Also, her hair is fabulous.

Makenzie Dustman

Makenzie Dustman

Okay, here is what Makenzie has going for her – she is a stunning girl and a stunning dancer. She has had a lot of experience in this field and has studied in a lot of styles, although she prefers classical contemporary. Here is where she may lose the audience – a lot of what she says comes off as, I don’t know, pretentious? In her video on fox.com/dance she says things like how she has never wanted to do anything this “commercial.” I’m not sure if it is just me or this is something other people are feeling about her. The good thing is I want to like her. So maybe she will ease up a bit during the show and we’ll see her softer side. What I do know – is if we are basing it only on dance, she is a frontrunner.

Malece Miller

Malece Miller

And finally we have Malece – she who was dropped on her head. I kind of feel bad because that’s really what we know about her now, isn’t it. All the lovely bits we saw during her initial audition has since disappeared. Knocked out on the floor of the lobby of the theater in Vegas. After that happened, she started to fade a bit during Vegas rounds, maybe because her head hurt, but she has remained a favorite with the audience. She did a lovely job in the Mia routine on Tuesday. I’m excited to see what she can bring and hope that she can put momentum back in her favor.

And that’s it! I’ll be back tomorrow night with a recap of the first real performance show!
