This show loves their contemporary dancers, and the So You Think You Can Dance Season 10 Top 20 certainly proves that. Of the 20 dancers, 8 are Contemporary, and 1 is Jazz, which, if we are talking very simplistically, is just contemporary’s sassier sister.

Three of these fellas are representing the male contemporary dancers this season.

Bad news for these guys – in 9 seasons, only one male Contemporary/Jazz guy has won… Season 1’s Nick Lazzarini. Or maybe that’s good news because they are overdue? Here’s another fun fact – they’ve come in second place five times (Travis Wall, Danny Tidwell, Brandon Bryant, Jakob Karr and Kent Boyd – a who’s who of my favorite guys!)

Carlos Garland

Carlos Garland

First up is Carlos. I have to admit, I don’t feel like I really know Carlos all that well. He wasn’t prominent in the auditions. But he was one that stood out for me in the Top 20 announcement episode. Also, his video on fox.com/dance gave me a good feeling about what he could bring to the competition. He had a good personality, he is trained in multiple styles, his tricks are insane… he reminded me of Neil Haskell. And I love Neil. I’m feeling pretty good about Carlos right now.  I’ve already imagined him blowing a Travis Wall routine out of the water. Let’s see if he delivers!

Nico Greetham

Nico Greetham

Nico’s dance this past week was gorgeous. He looks like he can be a great partner, and I’m anxious to get to see him attack (he was very adamant his dance style is hard hitting despite his cute little face) all the other styles. That said, I seriously can’t get a read on this kid. I watched his video and he seemed very passionate about dance. Obviously – it would be weird to be in the SYTYCD Top 20 and be blase about it. But I can’t tell what is personality is like. Everyone go watch and tell me what I should think about young Nico.

Tucker Knox

Tucker Knox

Here’s what I like about Tucker Knox. First – his name. That’s a great name. Second – he cut his hair. Yes, I’m still excited about this. Though I’m a little sad that I can’t go and pull on his curls anymore. (I realize this was never an actual possibility, but I girl’s got to have dreams) Third – he seems like a genuine guy, which probably comes from being able to dance after not being sure he was going to walk again. During that foursome contemporary piece on Tuesday, I was often drawn to watching him. I think he is a beautiful dancer, he seems very open to taking on other styles and just really excited to be on the show at all. I think of the 3 contemporary males, I have the highest hopes for Tucker. Will that pan out? Who knows! I’ve been very very wrong before. (But not that past two years. In case anyone is keeping track.)
