Mel B – America’s Got Talent Judge Profile| June 4, 2013 at 8:01 AM EST
America’s Got Talent Season 8 premieres Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at 9 pm and among the new faces at the judge’s table will be Melanie Brown. The freshman judge has started the new season off with a bumpy start having been booed by a live America’s Got Talent audience twice already. The first time was during auditions in New Orleans when she remarked that she was not a fan of brass music to which the audience responded by shouting “Go home!” at her. The second incident was at the New York City auditions when she buzzed a comedian off claiming she found his stereotypical humor offensive. Apparently the audience disagreed with her and booed Melanie yet again.
Melanie Brown, a/k/a Mel B may be new to America’s Got Talent, but she has plenty of experience judging talent competitions. Mel B has been a judge on The X Factor Australia, The X Factor U.K. and Britain and Ireland’s Next Top Model.
Mel B was born in Leeds, England on May 29, 1975. She became interested in dance early and studied performing arts in school. By the time she was 19 she moved to London to pursue her career.
Her first commercial success came when she auditioned for an all girl singing group which became known as The Spice Girls and Mel B shot to fame as “Scary Spice” of the British pop phenomenon. The group sang and danced their way to over $55 million in album sales worldwide under the management of Simon Fuller. Mel B’s solo career debuted with the single “I Want You Back”, a duet with Missy Elliott that went to #1 on the U.K. charts. She has released two solo albums, “Hot” and “LA State of Mind”.
Mel B has parlayed her singing success into an acting career and has appeared on Broadway in a production of “Rent” and on the London stage in “The Vagina Monologues”. Her television appearances include hosting the “Miss Universe Pageant” and serving as special correspondent for “Access Hollywood” and “Extra”. She also starred in her own reality series with her husband, Stephan Belafonte entitled, “Mel B: It’s a Scary World”.
Mel B competed as one of the celebrity dancers on the fifth season of “Dancing with the Stars” and took 2nd place in the competition with her partner after receiving a perfect score in the final. Her autobiography, “Catch A Fire” was a bestseller in the U.K. In her book, Mel B says her career has been based on inspiring people to tackle everything that comes their way. She says, “It’s all about feeling confident, listening to yourself, being in your own power”.
Mel B uses her star power to help further the goals of several charities including GLAAD, the NOH8 Campaign and the Susan G. Komen Foundation “Pose for the Cure” campaign. She has designed her own shoe line for charity with ShoeDazzle and has partnered with Will.I.Am for the “In My Name” charity which fights world poverty.
The variety of Mel B’s experience in the entertainment industry should be a good match for the variety format of America’s Got Talent. However, her outspoken manner and critiques have already proven to be unpopular with America’s Got Talent audiences. Are we in for some drama this season at the judge’s table? What do you think Mel B will bring to the new season of America’s Got Talent?
