Emily Van Camp or Elisabeth Harnois?

On one very solid hand, the new ABC series Revenge has a premise that sounds pretty original. It may have a pretty actress and a rich setting (the Hamptons) but I can’t think of a ton of shows where someone returns, all alone, to seek revenge to avail their father. I’m sure it’s been done in Greek tragedy’s or something, but whatever. Nonetheless, on the other hand – Revenge feels very familiar.

Many of you probably don’t remember the TV show Point Pleasant, but it was a decent TV show (created by Marti Noxon and John McLaughlin) that Fox canceled. It starred Elisabeth Harnois as a girl who gets literally washed up on shore, and is all alone even though she’s semi-adopted by a local family. Her Mother is dead, and her father is all mysterious and shady. Exposition, exposition, exposition – her real father is actually the devil. And hey, he wants her to go to the dark side!

So, what do these shows share? They’re both set on the seaside, and they both focus on one young girl who’s all alone and has daddy issues. Both of these girls are blonde(ish) and have mysterious pasts they aren’t entirely forthcoming about. There are sinister secrets on both shows. Both women get angry and decide to take out their revenge out on the town… And people on both shows have hoighty toighty last names like “Davenport” and “Hargrove.”

And these are only the vibes and knowledge I have without having seen an episode of Revenge. What’s more, I’m not the only TV blogger who’s mentioned this odd connection. So, what do you think? Have you seen Point Pleasant? Does it seem like Revenge? And most importantly, will you be tuning in to watch Revenge? (I will, even though I’ve heard it’s very cheesy.)

Revenge Summary: Wealth, beauty and status define the people in this town, but one woman is willing to destroy everyone for the sake of revenge.

Emily Thorne (Emily Van Camp) is new to the Hamptons. She’s met some of her wealthy neighbors, has made a few new friends and seemingly blends into the town. But something is a little odd about a young girl living in a wealthy town all on her own, and the truth is that Emily isn’t exactly new to the neighborhood. In fact, this was once her old neighborhood, until something bad happened that ruined her family and their reputation. Now Emily is back, and she’s returned to right some of those wrongs in the best way she knows how – with a vengeance.
