Patton Oswalt Understands Die-Hard Fans

Patton Oswalt did a terrific interview on EW about the Firefly comic he’s written, and so much of it is fantastically quoteable that I think you need to go read the entire thing. However, I’d like to draw attention to a couple of quotes in particular.

“Any extras that are out there, you want them because there’s such a finite amount of the thing that you love.”
Isn’t that so true when it comes to fandoms you love? Especially the ones that are knocked down before they should have been (*cough* Dead Like Me, Veronica Mars, Wonderfalls, Samantha Who?, FIREFLY…*cough*). You try to scrape up anything you can. That’s why DVD extras are brilliant.

“Joss Whedon keeps creating these zeitgeist-grabbing, fun, brilliant shows that then Fox — It’s like he hands them over to an angry punk that throws them against the wall and ruins them. [Laughs] I don’t understand why he has this relationship. It’s so odd.”
The world may never understand why Joss Whedon creates such amazing things, and not nearly enough people (or the people in charge) appreciate them enough. They slam it into the trash bin! Whedon is an under-appreciated man. I don’t know if I’d say “genius” – what’s another word for “genius”? 🙂 I actually think “Joss Whedon” is fairly synonymous with genius. Like if someone says, “Man, you really did a Whedon-caliber job” or “Way to Joss it up!” (Which probably means you did great but still got clobbered by the man).
