Just when you think we’ve reached the last edgy, hip idea…here comes Jenji Kohan and Liz Friedman with something new. Orange is the New Black is a Netflix Original Series based on the memoir by Piper Kerman.
The series has already been renewed for a second season, and the first hasn’t even premiered yet. Which is promising.
Story wise, viewers will follow Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) as she enters a women’s federal prison. What got her there is a suitcase of drug money that belonged to Chapman’s former love interest, Alex Vause (Laura Prepon.) The series will follow Chapman during her fifteen month sentence. Also stars Jason Biggs, Kate Mulgrew, Natasha Lyonne…and, hey, Weeds alum Michael Harney, of whom writer Stephen Falk spoke of highly. (There is also the up-and-coming Maria Dizzia who looks like Mary-Louise Parker. If you don’t believe us, look at this picture from the NYTimes and this one from LCT.
Hour-long. Looks promising. Check it out.
Orange is the New Black premieres on Netflix, July 11, 2013.
