Fawlty Towers Remastered: Special Edition

Fawlty Towers Remastered: Special Edition

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the epic TV series Fawlty Towers (with John Cleese) the BBC is releasing a special edition deluxe DVD set called Fawlty Towers Remastered. If, like me, you are interested in cool British comedy but aren’t sure exactly what Fawlty Towers is because your family never let you have cable growing up, let me explain using someone else’s (better) words!

Hot off the runaway success of Monty Python’s Flying Circus, John Cleese embarked on his now-legendary sitcom, Fawlty Towers, . One of the most memorable and best-loved characters in British comedy, Basil Fawlty is a much put-upon, hardworking hotel manager whose life is plagued by dead guests, hotel inspectors and other assorted riff-raff. Of course his biggest headache is his “little nest of vipers,” his nagging wife Sibyl, the unflappable Polly and the trainee waiter from Barcelona, Manuel, who has marginally more intelligence than a monkey.

Premiering in the UK in 1975 and airing in continuous PBS syndication ever since, , Fawlty Towers, has received three BAFTA Awards, Best Comedy Performance for John Cleese and two for Best Situation Comedy. In addition, the beloved sitcom is the BBC’s top-selling comedy series of all time on DVD.

So, do I think that Fawlty Towers is cool?: Duh. A funny family who lives at a hotel? I’m so ready to watch it.

When can you buy Fawlty Towers Remastered?: Now! Or yesterday if you know time travel. It was released on October 20th, 2009.

How much is the DVD?: $49.98 ($62.48 in Canada) or $42.98. from the BBC America Shop.

How many discs does Fawlty Towers Remastered have?: Three. But that’s like, 100 hours of TV. Not too shabby.

What special features does it have?: Not only is every episode restored to better clarify for you to watch, but the special edition set has new material like new commentary and cast interviews. There are also outtakes, featurettes, and a visit to Torquay: home of Fawlty Towers.

Anything else special going on with this?: So glad you asked. There is a costume contest on Facebook where there will be prizes that include a copy of the DVD signed by Cleese. You can also follow along on the Fawlty Towers Twitter.

Oh, aaaaand on behalf of the BBC and American Pop Digital we will be hosting a contest for this DVD where there will be two winners. YAYNESS. Look for that soon.
