These days you love her on Songs of Anarchy. But Katey Sagal has quite a history!

Beautiful and talented: Katy Sagal

Sons of Anarchy, one of FX’s highest rated series, stars Charlie Hunnam, Ron Perlman and 2011 Golden Globe® Award-winner Katey Sagal in an adrenalized drama about a notorious outlaw motorcycle club intent on protecting Charming, their small Northern California town, against encroaching drug dealers, corporate developers and overzealous law officers. Although Katy has certainly received much acclaim for her role in SOA, she has had a whirlwind career and a resume that would stretch for miles and miles! Here, we will discuss some of her career highlights. It’s going to make you feel like a lazy person!

Vocalist – 1970’s

Starting in 1973, Sagal began working as a backup singer for diverse group of singers, including Bob Dylan and Gene Simmons. She also was a part of a band called The Group With No Name (mysterious!) who released only one album called Moon Over Brooklyn. Then in 1979, she was lucky enough to be hired as a touring backup vocalist for none other than Bette Midler. That’s right. Bette Midler.

Married With Children – 1987 to 1997

Although Sagal had done some TV work prior to landing the gig of Peg Bundy, this was by far her biggest break and helped to make her a household name. For her audition, Segal donned her own red wig that the producers’ liked so much, it became part of her signature look on the show. Did you know that? I didn’t!

Futurama – 1999 to 2003

In 1999, Matt Groening recruited Sagal to do the voice of Leela, the purple haired, one-eyed spaceship captain in the animated science fiction series Futurama. She was born for this role! Although the show was cancelled after only 5 seasons, its cult following not only helped the series to stay on TV in syndication, but also led Comedy Central to order 4 direct to DVD films. These were later broadcast as 16 separate episodes. Catch up on them, now!

8 Simple Rules – 2002 to 2005

Sagal was cast in the new sitcom 8 Simple Rules for Dating my Teenage Daughter in 2002 alongside the late John Ritter. (RIP) Although the show continued with the help of some new cast members including David Spade (he’s a trooper!), Sagal only completed 3 episodes of season 2 of the show; it was then cancelled after the airing of its third season.

Sons of Anarchy – 2008 to the present

Since 2008, Sagal has played Gemma Teller Morrow on FX’s Sons of Anarchy. This role has really let the actress spread her wings beyond comedic parts and to show that she is a versatile actress who can make her viewers ache with laughter, as well as with pain and sadness, all while still staying true to her tough biker persona. Sagal won a Golden Gloge in 2011 for her work on Sons. Aren’t you proud of her?

Note: This is a press release that was modified slightly.

Season 3 of Sons of Anarchy is available on DVD and Blu-Ray on August 30th.
