Throughout this season of Justified, Raylan has been dealing with several guys who are, while often amusing, really bad. Dickie, Boyd, Limehouse, Wynn and Quarles have all been a thorn in Raylan’s side at one point or another. I think the only thing that could make it worse is if some of them teamed up somehow. Yeah…. Raylan is going to be very unhappy with the turn of events at the end of this week’s episode, “Measures.”

Before we get to the goodies, I bet you know what made me very excited this week – TIM & RACHEL! YAY! Both Jacob Pitts and Erica Tazel have been sorely underused this season, something I hope that is remedied in season 4, so seeing them on screen and being badass together this week while staking out Dickie Bennett (Jeremy Davies) after he got out of prison was my happy place this week. Especially when Rachel kicked some guy in his special place for getting fresh with her.

They also helped set into motion the final leg of one of the smaller, but I feel, more important storylines of the season – where is Limehouse (Mykelti Williamson) keeping the Bennett money? I think we all knew it wasn’t where Dickie thinks (thanks to Ellen Mae) – under the church, just as Harlan County urban legends always told it to be. Errol let Dickie know that he can help him get the money, but they would need help. I’ll get to that in a bit….

And now I’d like to take a minute to discuss what is possibly the most captivating storyline this season…. no not the crazy of Robert Quarles (Neal McDonough) or Raylan’s (Timothy Olyphant) annoyance with the lawbreakers. I’m talking about none other than Dickie Bennett’s hair. Seriously. What is happening there? Whose decision was it to have it go in this direction. Was it the hair and makeup people? Showrunner, Graham Yost? Just Davies being crazy? It has gotten crazier the more desperate Dickie becomes? It is now some sort of psychotic mix of mohawk and mullett that I can’t possibly describe. But I’m fascinating. All the Emmys for Dickie’s hair!

Anyway… Quarles’s descent into madness has been horrifyingly mesmerizing, hasn’t it? This week he got Napier to give him the name of a drug dealer under Boyd’s (Walton Goggins) protection as a way to make them even for all the money Quarles put into Napier’s ultimately unsuccessful campaign. And when Quarles found the drug dealers he killed them, took the money and took it to Limehouse as a way to get sanctuary in the Holler. Thing is, Quarles is losing it a bit, so he’s not the one who is 3 steps ahead anymore. Limehouse doesn’t want the money, so he sends Quarles to Audrey’s (the trailer park whore house) to get cash for his drugs. Things go awry from there.

Meanwhile, Raylan is dealing with the fallout of his confrontation in the bar with Quarles. Good news for him – Lindsay the bartender isn’t too clingy and just wants to take advantage of Raylan when she can. (So many things to say…. biting my tongue…. ME TOO! Darn it. Couldn’t keep it together.) Raylan also gets a visit from a couple Detroit players (one played by the always imposing Michael Ironside). Raylan assumes they are there to hurt him for messing with Quarles. Oh Raylan… you are missing such a huge piece of the puzzle!

I love the mix-ups that follow. Raylan and Art (Nick Searcy) have some bonding time, going after Quarles to arrest him for threatening a Federal Marshal where they see the Detroit guys go see Wynn (Jere Burns). Wynn has the same reaction as Raylan – they are here to kill him. But everyone is wrong. They are here to kill Quarles. Wynn eventually talks to Theo Tonin (Adam Arkin) the head of the Detriot Mob and surrogate father to Quarles. He tasks Wynn with taking care of Quarles. $100K if he kills him, $200 if he brings him in alive so Sammy can do it. Awww… looking out for his son. So Wynn and the guys go to find Quarles with Raylan and Art following.

When Raylan and Art stop the guys and arrest them, they soon realize that they weren’t there to protect Quarles, they were all looking to kill them, and if they had just left it alone they would have taken care of the problem for Raylan. Raylan’s face is priceless. But at least poor Donovan (Marshall Allman) is set free! But all hope is not lost for Raylan. When Quarles goes to Audrey’s he’s met by Boyd who tasers him and ties him up. Then Boyd and Wynn partner up to take Qualres down.

And that’s just one part of the mass of unholy alliances that begin to form this week. Remember Errol told Dickie that he knew who could help get the money – it’s Boyd. Boyd who wants to kill Dickie. And also Boyd who know how Quarles tied up and is partnered with Wynn. Oh what a tangled web of bad guys Raylan is going to get stuck in!

I love when Raylan and Art have their surrogate father/son moments. This one was a great one as Art made sure Raylan realized his kid was going to need him and maybe it was time to stop being so overly cavalier. Just, you know, regular cavalier.

Only two more episodes left in the season. I bet they are going to be a doozy!
