Would the diplomatic Jimmy Fallon ever agree to host The Tonight Show? Read on, and read in-between the lines.

Jimmy Fallon stopped by The Ellen DeGeneres Show and talked about his own show (Late Night with Jimmy Fallon) and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

Ellen: With everything that went on with Jay and with Conan, do you think about that, if that ever got offered to you? To me, that’s a scary situation after what happened with Jay and Conan but if they offered that to you, would you go into that time slot?

Jimmy: I’m the third person because Letterman did this time slot and then he went to CBS. Then Conan did this time slot and he’s at TBS. So I think if there’s a lesson to be learned, if you do this, you’re guaranteed not to host the Tonight Show. Of course I’d love to do it whenever Jay’s ready, if Jay wants to retire. I love being at 12:30. It’s a comforting time slot because it’s so late at night. I think I’m on at like 12:37 at night which [targets] college kids and convicts. And my parents. They’re the only people watching so I’m very comfortable with it. I’m just really having fun and I’m learning what I’m doing.

Ellen: Well, you just get better and better. I’ve always adored you from Saturday Night live. I think you’re hilarious.

If only being hilarious could always pay the bills.
