The Most Sexist Scene in Glee’s Power of Madonna Episode

I wasn’t done talking about Glee‘s Madonna episode, were you? You’ve been listening to that episode’s Glee songs nonstop, it’s okay to admit it. This is a safe space! I’ve already posted my Glee Madonna Review, but I have even more thoughts on the episode after I re-watched it. I’ve mostly only said good things about the episode, but there were some things that made me feel squicked. Which means: weird.

Okay. I’m just gonna say it. I am not in love with Cory Monteith’s singing. It’s nice to have a new male lead in Jonathan Groff. The Rachel and Finn mash-up was cute,sure . But the most interesting part of it for me was seeing all of the Madonna kids in the background. It makes me want to go watch all of her different movies. Finn seems blah. Beige. Boring.

Onto a male I like more, let’s discuss Kurt. He has the strongest male voice in all probability and was looking seriously hot when he was in his Cheerio’s uniform and performing “4 Minutes” with Mercedes. Part of who got cast for each part in Glee, as with any show, had to do with what people look the part for the characters. I just really wish they’d gotten a stronger male lead (oh look, I’m hating on Finn again). But back to the Cheerios…was it weird that Mercedes was not in a skirt like the other girls, but a pair of pants like the boys? Was this a conscious decision, and if so – why?

I was super surprised by what they showed us between Tina and Artie. It was so (sososo) rushed (while Finn/Rachel get everything drawn out). Boom – Artie forgives Tina. Boom – he’s being a jackass to her even though it seems out of character for him. And then he apologizes and she wants to get all up on him. Boom, boom, boom! There was so much material there but it happened within (approx) three minutes!

Speaking of character’s that were acting out of character, they keep pushing the line with Will. Are we supposed to hate him a little? Was I really the only person who felt awkward in the scene where Will informs Emma that she is going to get help. Whether he meant for her OCD in general, or for her sex and intimacy issues, it felt very forced – like a Dad telling his kid what to do. Emma is her own woman. She doesn’t need Will dictating to her how and when to get better. Could Will encourage her to get help? Yes. He could have done exactly what he did in the episode (giving her the info, setting it up) had he done it in more of a caring way. Here it played like “you didn’t do the nasty with me, and since we have all of this totally boring time until my divorce is final, please fix your crazy head”. This felt like the most sexist scene, and it came from Will – who was supposed to be all anti that approach. Of course, Will is also the one who asked if he could “break up this sorority party”. Will is kind of a jerk.

I promise that I still totally loved this Glee episode, and I’m not even focusing on every little detail (like how Quinn didn’t look half as pregnant as she did in Sectionals, especially in the Express Yourself number – SEE THE TOP PIC).I still love Glee even if I’ve taken a more critical approach with this second review.
