As free-spirited Larissa Loughlin on The Carrie Diaries, Freema Agyeman makes her debut for U.S. television. And since she’s new to many of us, we want to give you some of her back story as well as sharing fun tidbits of trivia.
Prominent Who Roots
For those unfamiliar with this British beauty, something important to know is that she played a key role in the beloved series Doctor Who. Her character was the lovesick, tough Martha Jones who played alongside the Tenth incarnation of the Doctor, as played by David Tennant. She has since also appeared on the spinoff series, Torchwood. What you may not know is that she auditioned for three other characters on Doctor Who, first. In fact, you can see her as the character of “Adeola” in the episode “Army of Ghosts”. She’s essentially Doctor Who royalty.
One Less E
Freema’s birthname is actually spelled “Frema” but she changed it to be easier to pronounce.
Freema has a tattoo that means something significant to her. The Persian word for free (“raha”) is drawn under the image of a butterfly. Located on her upper arm, it’s a reminder to her of her Persian ancestry as her Mother is Iranian.
You might be able to relate to Agyeman with this! She is a self-proclaimed procrastinator. In fact, when she’s not procrastinating she’s being entirely too thorough by over-thinking on things, also delaying results.
Her Lips are Sealed
Don’t look for major spoilers from The Carrie Diaries from Freema! Shes’ stated in a 2008 Huffington Post interview that she prefers to know less so she doesn’t have information to accidentally spoil. In fact, before big press meetings she’d make “the conscious decision to not read the script” beforehand. As for why she embraces this method it’s because she genuinely doesn’t, “want to ruin anything for anybody.” Isn’t that sweet?
- Freema is actually rather short at just 5’2″, though this height doesn’t bother her.
- If she wasn’t an actress she’d be a vet.
- Her Mother is a Muslim and her Father, from Ghana, is a Methodist. But she carved her own path and her chosen religion is Roman Catholic.
- She enjoys karaoke.
We hope to get the chance to interview Agyeman in the future, and then we’ll have even more juicy goodies for you to learn about your favorite new face on The CW!
