DVD Review: Extreme Makeover Weight Loss Edition – “Bootcamp” doesn’t feel so bad!
| July 2, 2013 at 11:55 PM EDTWould you like the upbeat and charismatic Chris Powell to come to your house and encourage you to get fit so you can strut happily in your skinny jeans? Well, now you can with the newest DVD: Extreme Makeover Weight Loss Edition: Bootcamp. Him and his red sneakers will come right into your living room and tell you things like “embrace that burn!” He even says things like “I’m gonna keep you on the ground right now” which can give some of us gutter minds a bit of a giggle.
This DVD (available from Amazon) is for people of any body shape and fitness level, and it has four progressive levels along with a warm up and cool down. The work-outs will challenge you, but only as much as you’d like. Do the entire DVD from start to finish, or choose to only do one or two levels at once. With all of the options and variety, this DVD will keep you interested and motivated to continue.
Each workout lets you select to do it with only music or with the trainer instructions. This is a nice little feature for those you want it.
Having an attractive, upbeat guy as your personal trainer really does give you a boost in confidence and motivation.
Something that always strikes me as obvious is that we like to feel current, which is why the more recent a workout video is, the more we connect to it. If you gave me some random Tae Bo DVD from the 90’s, I’d probably feel pretty “meh” about working with it, simply because it would look dated and seem (in my mind) out of date. Which is why I’m always a fan of changing up your fitness DVDs, especially as more current ones come out for you to use. They’re not expensive at all, especially if you make yourself use them a lot. Then the cost per use is pennies a day. In fact, that’s even better motivation to use the DVD to work out – because you want to make sure you are getting the best amount of money out of your investment.
Something I didn’t like about this DVD is that you cannot skip through the first 50 minute introduction. Or at least that’s what I seemed to take away while I tried to jab the remote to skip it. I hate when DVDs do this, and I really wish this one would just let you get to the point…especially as it’s a fitness DVD and it boasts all these different levels you can go to.
The warm-up is a little over six minutes long, and gets you moving all over the floor. But nothing was too hard, and I recognized several basic yoga poses built into the stretches.
For those who are wary of being able to complete the moves, this DVD focuses on beginners moves for every exercise. And before you worry that you aren’t doing enough and the whole thing feels worthless, Powell tells you why the move is still working your abs and your gluts and whatever else. (Does any one move work both the abs and gluts? Whatever!)
Another thing I love about these work-outs is you change up your movement a lot, which translates to never being bored or feeling like you’re so annoyed you’re going to quit.
