Like Isobel, Edith and Violet, we viewers can only lean in and watch as Lady Mary’s new romantic entanglements unravel. And boy, are we ever intrigued.

Additionally, it’s taken me this long into season 4 of ‘Downton Abbey,’ but I now realize that Mary and Branson are besties. And it looks like Mr. Mosley is getting one, too.

‘Downton Abbey’ Recap – live style

This ‘Downton Abbey’ recap is meant to be an internal dialogue of my thoughts, live, as I watched this episode.

We are starting out with…pigs, again. My, there are a lot of pigs. And those tiny black pigs are super CUTE. I know that having a pig as a pet is probably not smart, but my LORD do I feel like I need one pretty often. (Like, twice a year I PONDER this.)

Mary and Branson have decided that the original pig dude, even if he made an accident, isn’t worth giving another chance. Cold. …Of course, when has Mary not been icy?

Getting offered a job of managing pigs is made to seem like a great honor. Mary is so smug. She’s offering him a chance to work with PIGS.

“Work’s like old age, m’lady. The worst thing in the world, except for the alternative.”

“It’s on my me.”
“I always feel that greeting betrays such a lack of self worth.” – Violet

Rose is…annoying. Does anyone like this spit-fire? She’s such trouble, and the Crawley’s already have ENOUGH trouble.

(P.S. Even teenagers back in the 20’s were obsessed with the phone, see?)

A BAZAAR. I want to have a bazaar. And I will, as soon as I look up what that entails.

‘Downton Abbey’ TV recap — Season 4, Episode 6: How do you like your eggs?

Mrs. Patmore HATES that sewing machine.

“Don’t rise to it. She just wants us to think her life’s interesting.” – Daisy

A little cherishing, hm? Is that like…a spa day? Do you think Violet really knows what happened with Edith?

Oh Anna, TELL HER. Tell her!

Despite all the tragedy in her life, Cora manages to shine.

“Please, bother me.” – Lady Mary

AAAAH. Now the secret is out.

Alfred wants to marry Ivy? What about poor Daisy! Can’t he marry ANYONE else? Anyone but the one person that will kill Daisy’s heart? ALFRED, I am VERY disappointed!

Anna, could you be more obvious?

Edith likes Mr. Drew. It’s sweet.

Meeting at the bookshop. Remember when we had book shops? Real ones, with books? Not just coffee shops that sell tablets and candles.

Rose, you caught. YOU CAUGHT.

Mosley’s becoming Baxter’s only real friend. It’s…sweet.

You know what we haven’t realized? (Or at least what I haven’t realized.) Mary and Branson are kind of besties. When he has to confide in someone, he goes to Mary. And I think Mary and Branson feel like they’re equals and …going through the same stuff in life.

Mary is forced to play a big sister, again.

I’m sad that Edith can only confide in her aunt, not her Mom. Cora is SO sweet and flexible!

Complications – comp plee caw she ons!

Mary him, huh? Partially to get back at Mummy, huh? ARGH.

I respect Mary for knowing her boundaries , and knowing she’s not free.

Oh. Of course Violet knows why Edith is going to take a trip.

“I see I have to take the slow path.” – Violet

“Rosamund has no interest in French. If she wishes to be understood by a foreigner. She shouts.” – Violet

“If I tell you the truth, Granny, then you’ll never talk to me again.” – Edith
“Then you have told me the truth.” – Violet

Rose has gone and got herself engaged. Of course.

Mr. Bate is plotting. This will lead to no good.

They’re really pushing this Branson/New Woman storyline.

Mr. Mosley is finally GETTING HIS. Ya dig?

Jack Ross…I’m sad to hear you won’t be marrying Rose. Even though it’s too early to get married. It’s tragic that BECAUSE he loves her, he will end it.

All this talk about a better world…how can it get better if no one tries to make it so?

So, Bates is walking all the way to York, even though back in season one he could hardly walk at all? I forget how they solved that problem.

I’m sorry. How does ANY woman take a broken engagement with “real style”? He’s fallen in love with another woman and called it off with you, Mabel. And all for a woman who refuses to be his fiance, to boot. Smash his face!

Violet is trying to set up Isobel, awww. Those are very pretty flowers. I like the color choices.

POTATO SACK RACES. Does anyone still do that – hop into a potato bag and hop?

“If you’re going to complicate your life, do it for your own reasons.” – Mary

Robert and Cora are truly in love. I love that about them.

Look at that countryside…with Daisy’s picnic. It’s so pretty.

I’m not sure I like Violet’s idea of life being one series of problems after the next until we die. Yikes.

Mr. Greene is dead. Well, THAT WAS BATES.

I’m glad Daisy and Alfred are leaving things on a good note.
