I actually really, really like Dollhouse. I won’t say I’m a fan of Whedon – in fact, I just heard of him less than half a year ago when I watched Firefly. But the things I have seen by Whedon in the last half a year has been amazing. Firefly has easily become one of my favorite television shows of all time. Dollhouse is among my top three favorite shows out this season. And Dr. Horrible was incredible – I bought the soundtrack and still listen to the songs on my music player (heck, my girlfriend and I sometimes break into Dr. Horrible songs for no apparent reasons). I just started watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer (yeah, I’m very, very late), but four episodes in, I don’t really like it. Maybe it’ll grow on me; we’ll see.

“who actually takes all these risks on a niche writer who’s never had a major hit on a major network? FOX.” – Er…have you heard of Buffy the Vampire Slayer? While it may not have been on a ‘major network’ (cos they do all the quality programming! *sarcasm*) It’s still regarded as one of the 50 greatest TV shows of all time!

And if Fox hadn’t foxed around with both Firefly and Dollhouse, they would have had bigger audiences and Dollhouse would have been a more consistent show. The sucky eps were the Fox mandated ones, the good eps were the Fox buttout ones. It shows. Firefly was total win from start to finish. If you don’t like us “bleating” about Fox, why are you reading a post about a Whedon show being cancelled by Fox?

In any case, great article, I totally agree. And long may Joss provide us with televisual, comic, internet and movie greatness.

There was so much wrong with the writing of Dollhouse, making Caroline an eco-terrorist, the fact that all these rich people could find the Dollhouse but a trained investigator couldn’t, how do you profit from such a niche market, why didn’t they send Echo to the attic after she glitched so much, and the concept built on the rich and powerful brain-washing and raping the powerless.

No wonder the show got cancelled, an unappealing concept together with an arrogant, liberal lead character, and a poorly thought out concept. The cast, Penkitt apart, was marvellous, but to put it politely the writing stunk.

And as for all the bleating about FOX, who actually takes all these risks on a niche writer who’s never had a major hit on a major network? FOX.

Here’s an idea. WHy not complain about the rest of the alphabet not having the stones to take on Whedon’s ‘brilliance’?
