The news was announced today during a live television broadcast, this Sunday, on the BBC.

The twice-nominated BAFTA Scottish actor is best known for his role as Malcolm Tucker in “The Thick of It.” Who fans will remember him playing a Roman Noble (“Caecilius”)  in the Doctor Who episode “The Fires of Pompeii.” And this is not the first time that DW has recycled a talented actor for another role.

Both Freema Agyeman (The Carrie Diaries)and Karen Gillan had minor roles on the series before becoming a series regular as a companion. In fact, Gillan’s bit role was in the same episode about Pompeii as Capaldi’s. Talk about a fun mind bender.

Also noteworthy is that in the movie “World War Z”, Capaldi played the part of a Doctor in the World Healthy Organization… making him a WHO Doctor. Could this have been on purpose?

Capaldi’s starting age is different than the previous two doctors, clocking in at 55 years old. Seems it was time for a change in the format.

Showrunner Steven Moffat has said that he even thought of Capaldi to become Doctor Who when David Tennant (Ten) was leaving.

All of that adds up to Capaldi snagging this role. And what do you think of that? Happy, sad, gassy?
