I didn’t plan to watch Oprah today, but I turned on the tube and saw Carrie Fisher‘s face. After watching (and reviewing!) her HBO special, I have so much respect and genuine admiration for this woman. She’s a clever, smart and sassy person that knows how to entertain. Luckily, I turned on the TV early enough to catch the entire Carrie Fisher OPRAH episode.
The Oprah Blurb about this Show: The Elizabeth Taylor scandal, drug addiction and mental breakdown. Icon Carrie Fisher makes a rare appearance with her mother, living legend Debbie Reynolds.
Debbie Reynolds: She is a living legend, if you’re not familiar with her go watch Singing in the Rain. She married singing sensation Eddie Fisher and they were America Sweethearts. They had two children, and Debbie was in Tammy and the Bachelor and earned a Oscar nomination as The Unsinkable Molly Brown.
Carrie Fisher: As Princess Leia in The Star Wars trilogy she became a legend, and she’s been in plenty of other movies like When Harry Met Sally (I’m sure you’ve seen that). She’s also a writer. Her book Postcards from the Edge was made into a movie with Meryl Streep. Right now she has a one woman show called Wishful Drinking.
“Everywhere I go I’m Princess Leia’s Mother now,” Debbie told Oprah happily.
When Eddie left Debbie for Elizabeth Taylor, it was as big as the Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston scandal. Only, as Carrie pointed out, Brad and Jen didn’t have kids and Jen wasn’t best friends with Jolie.
Carrie Fisher is now a spokeswoman for Jenny Craig. She’s so far lost 17 lbs. Admitting she’s always had body image issues she said that even when she was Princess Leia in her infamous gold bikini she thought she was fan.
Fisher now has Electro Shock Therapy on a regular basis. About the results she says, “It blows it (the cement of her mind) apart, and you can move on…”
Reynolds has bought many Hollywood costumes for her collection, including the Marilyn Monroe subway dress which is so old it’s turned ecru (from white.) It’s worth $2 million. She also has some Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton’s costume pieces from Cleopatra, Julie Andrew’s guitar and peasant dress from The Sound of Music. Isn’t that amazing? It’s going on sale this June.
For the first time ever, Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher sang together. They sang “You Made Me Love You” and “Happy Days Are Here Again.” Seeing Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds singing was emotional. They sang to each other like there was no audience, just them. Magical.
