What if I told you that there could be a really cool TV series starring Calista Flockhart (Brothers & Sisters), Lucy Liu (Charlie’s Angels), Portia de Rossi (Arested Development), Jane Krakowski (30 Rock), and Courtney Thorne Smith (According to Jim)? Wait, wait. What if I said that on top of that, the main character would have inner visual fantasies (like shooting arrows into someone) that you would be visually privy to? And what if I told you that this show already exists?

While I suspect plenty of you already know I’m talking about the series Ally McBeal, most of you under 20 may are clueless about it. I was always aware of this series, but I was much more into TV shows set in my age range when this show aired.

Season three of Ally McBeal (1999) starts off great. The episode is called  “Car Wash” and it guest stars a familiar face for those who loved the TV series Angel. It also showcases plenty of awesome 90’s fashion, a Smashmouth song set to a montage,  the quip: “walk a mile in her diaphragm,” and Lucy Liu in the biggest hat ever. There’s something about this show that feels timeless, and has a warmth and pleasing quality. I don’t think most legal dramas are called “feel good” but I’d describe Ally McBeal as a feel good show.

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has re-released the Ally McBeal DVDs for seasons 3, 4 and (the final) 5. There are previously released DVDs but these have major change in DVD covers. They’re fresh, spunky, and cute. There was always controversy about Ally wearing skirts that were too short. I never took notice of that in the few episodes I watched back in the 90’s, but the covers do show a lot of leg!
